Plans to turn Gatwick hotel in to immigration centre rejected
27.01.10
Plans to convert a Gatwick hotel into an immigration detention and removal centre have been refused. Arora Management Services had applied for permission to convert the four-star Mercure Gatwick Hotel near the airport's north terminal into a secure removal unit. The application was turned down by planning officers at Crawley Borough Council on the grounds there was no proven requirement for the facility.
There are currently two immigration detention centres near Gatwick. The Home Office confirmed on Tuesday that it had no plans to open a third removal unit near Gatwick Airport. Local residents and businesses objected to the plans saying they were not comfortable with the idea of a facility surrounded by a security fence on the airports doorstep.
