Manchester airport join Virgin for Gatwick bid
24.11.08
Manchester Airports Group (MAG) is reported to be joining a £2.5bn Virgin Atlantic-led consortium to bid for Gatwick Airport. The consortium, which is also said to include budget airline easyJet, is also understood to be in talks with Goldman Sachs’ infrastructure group over financing the bid.
MAG - which owns Manchester, Bournemouth, East Midlands and Humberside airports - announced it would consider bidding for one of BAA’s airports after the Competition Commission said that it was likely to force the airports operator to sell two London and one Scottish hub. BAA put Gatwick up for sale to pre-empt this, and hopes to sell Gatwick before the middle of 2009.
