Gatwick bidders want second runway
24.04.09
It has been reported that all of the bidders for Gatwick Airport have demanded a second runway in their plans. The bidders are seemingly ignoring concerns over pollution and the environment - and promises by the Conservatives that they will block a new runway at Heathrow if they come to power - and say the new runway is essential to making Gatwick work.
There is an agreement in place that no new runway will be built at Gatwick before 2019, although this could be changed by an act of parliament. But the bidders are reported to be keen to begin preparations for a new runway, which would help the airport compete with Heathrow, as soon as possible.
The reports also suggest that a forth bidder may have emerged. Private equity firm, Terra Firma, are said to be in the running with three widely reported consortiums.
