Air hostess faces £80,000 bill after failed Gatwick fall case
23.04.08
An air hostess who won less than £4,700 damages after twisting her ankle at Gatwick Airport was ordered to pay almost £80,000 legal costs by the Court of Appeal earlier this week.
Lisa Carver, 34, of Witney, Oxfordshire, was on her way to the Gatwick terminal building in 2003 when she fell heavily in a lift which broke down and stopped 2ft below floor level. She suffered torn ligaments and was off work for four weeks.
Ms Carver sued BAA for up to £20,000. BAA admitted liability and offered her £4,520 but she rejected it. Last year Central London county court awarded her £4,686 but made no order for costs, forcing her to pay her own legal bill of £80,000. She appealed - but two judges rejected her appeal this week as ‘farcical’.
