Staff shortage blamed for airport queues
24.03.08
Easter weekend queues at UK airports were made longer by the Government's failure to recruit enough immigration officers to keep pace with soaring passenger numbers, the Conservatives have claimed.
Tory immigration spokesman Damian Green released figures showing that the number of immigration officers at Heathrow and Gatwick has increased by 5.9% since 2001, while passenger throughput has grown by 12.5% over the same period.
He said that the disparity was causing ‘misery’ for passengers who are forced to queue as they come back into the country after trips abroad.
