Gatwick advisory group to consider airport’s snow response
23.01.11
Gatwick Airport's response to last month's arctic blast of heavy snow and ice is to be examined, the Redhill Life reports. Advisory group Gatwick Airport Consultative Committee (GATCOM) will look at how the airport coped during the severe weather.
The heavy snow forced Gatwick to close for two days in early December, when Heathrow remained open, causing havoc with flights and people's travel plans. But when more severe weather hit the country later in December, Gatwick had increased its fleet of snow-clearing vehicles from 47 to 97, putting Gatwick’s snow clearing capability on a par with that of Oslo airport in Norway, at a cost of £8m, and only had to close for a matter of hours, when rival Heathrow was closed for five days.
GATCOM is to review the airport's performance at its meeting at the Hilton Hotel at the airport's South Terminal on Thursday (January 27) at 14:00. The meeting will include a report from Gatwick Airport about its response to the very severe weather conditions. The meeting will be open to the public.
