Astronaut gets Gatwick role
22.11.09
The new owners of Gatwick have appointed James van Hoften, a former astronaut who now runs the airports arm of American engineering giant Bechtel, to its new board of directors. Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), the GE-Credit Suisse joint venture that agreed to buy Gatwick from BAA last month, has unveiled its board, with former permanent secretary for the Department of Transport Sir David Rowlands the airport's new chairman.
GIP have promised a ‘relentless’ focus on customer service. Sir David said: ‘An independent Gatwick has a tremendous opportunity to inject real competition into the London airports market. This new board will work with Gatwick’s management team to drive the airport to a competitive future in its target market through more efficient operations and a relentless focus on customer service.’
GIP, which also controls London City Airport, expects to complete the acquisition of Gatwick in the first week of December. Other non-executive board members of Gatwick include former BAA International managing director Andrew Jurenko, ex-head of transport at Credit Suisse Michael McGhee and former head of GE Infrastructure Bill Woodburn.
