Bird strike emergency for Thomson Gatwick flight

A Gatwick bound Thomson plane had to make an emergency landing in Florida after a bird struck one of the aircraft's engines shortly after take off. Flight TOM033, carrying 254 people and 12 crew, hit the bird minutes after it left Sanford Airport at 18:20 local time on Wednesday. Passengers described hearing a loud bang and then smelling smoke inside the Boeing 767-300 plane.
Thomson said the pilot decided to return to Sanford as a precaution and that no-one was hurt. Passengers were put up at an airport hotel while the aircraft was checked over. The flight had been due to arrive at Gatwick Airport at 06:50 yesterday morning.
