Passengers unhappy over Monarch Gatwick flight problems
22.04.09
The pilot of a Monarch chartered flight carrying holidaymakers from Gatwick to Egypt had to return to the terminal twice because of mechanical problems having failed to take off, the Daily Mail reports. Graham Owen, a passenger and former customs officer, told the newspaper: 'People were saying that they simply didn't believe the plane was safe. They were demanding a new plane.'
The Airbus A300 carrying 355 passengers first left the terminal at 09:00, but the pilot was unable to get airborne on two tries. The passengers were taken back to the terminal, but the plane once again tried to take off shortly before noon after a fault with the electrical system was repaired. After another abortive takeoff, passengers once again were back at the terminal. This time, problems with the fuel line were found and fixed.
The plane finally took off at 17:30 on Monday bound for Taba, more than eight hours late. A spokesman for Monarch said the mechanical problems were unrelated to each other and denied that there had been any passenger unrest.
