Gatwick reopens after overnight closure
21.12.10
Gatwick Airport has reopened its runway after heavy snowfall grounded aircraft last night. The airport has said 600 flights are scheduled today with about 100,000 passengers expected to travel, but warned passengers to expect delays and cancellations because of continuing severe weather conditions.
A total of 150 staff worked through the night to clear snow and ice from the runway as passengers were told to go home rather than wait inside the terminal buildings. In a statement the airport said: ‘Gatwick safely reopened its runway at 06:00. The first departure was a Monarch flight to Innsbruck which took off at 06:06.'
‘Passengers should expect further disruption today, with delays and cancellations inevitable. Those planning to travel through Gatwick today, and for the rest of this week, should check the flight status on their airline's website first and only make their way to the airport if their flight has been confirmed.’
