Airline refuses to fly ‘too fat’ passenger
21.06.10
A 181kg man planning to take a flight to see his dying aunt was kicked off the plane because he was too fat. Sandy Russell was denied permission to travel because his 52-inch belly was overflowing into the next seat and the armrest could not go down.
He had just boarded the Air Transat plane from Gatwick to Toronto when a stewardess escorted him off. The 32-year-old was told he would have to pay for two full-price tickets if he wanted to fly.
Mr Russell could not fly as he did not have the extra £928 for the fare. His aunt Judy died of bowel cancer in Canada two days after he was due to see her. The airline has refunded the cost of his ticket.
