Gatwick gets A380 superjumbo permission
19.10.10
Gatwick Airport has been granted planning permission to operate the world's largest passenger plane - the giant 555-seat Airbus A380 superjumbo. The green light means British Airways and Virgin Atlantic - who have both ordered the giant aircraft - could operate the A380 from the airport.
Currently Heathrow and Manchester are the only UK airports able to be able to accommodate the superjumbo, with flights from Emirates to Manchester and Emirates, Qantas plus Singapore Airlines to Heathrow.
However, to our knowledge, Gatwick does not currently have a gate capable of taking the double decker plane, so flights in the short term are unlikely. A new gate to take the plane could be part of its £1bn redevelopment though.
