BA announce Gatwick – New York flights; scrap Manchester service

British Airways announced today that it is boosting services from London to New York JFK by starting daily flights from Gatwick Airport on October 27, when it launches its winter schedule. However, the airline also announced that it will 'suspend' (airline speak for scrap) its New York flights from Manchester at the same time.
The new Gatwick flights mean that BA will fly 62 times each week from London to JFK, with as the new flights operating in addition to its 55 weekly flights from Heathrow. They will operate on a four class Boeing 777 - that will be moved from Heathrow - with First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins.
BA will also start new short haul routes from Gatwick this October with daily services to Oporto and Valencia. Second daily services from Gatwick to Alicante and Turin will also be added from the end of October. Flights to Warsaw will move from Gatwick back to Heathrow in October too.
However, the airline said it will 'suspend' its daily flight from Manchester to New York JFK in October and move the Boeing 767 aircraft that operates the service to Heathrow, which will free up the 777 for the Gatwick service, we guess. So it looks like a straight swap - Gatwick for Manchester - as BA increasingly focuses on London airports having sold its regional flights business last year.
Robin Hayes, British Airways' Executive Vice President, Americas, said: ‘The new Gatwick service will give our customers even more choice when flying between New York and London. Not only do we already have an extensive schedule from both JFK and Newark to Heathrow, but next year we will launch business-only flights to London City.’
