Air industry forms lobby group to fight 'unfair' green taxes
18.03.07
easyJet and BAA are spearheading a new coalition to lobby against what they believe are unfair environmental taxes being levied on the aviation industry, the Independent newspaper reports. The new lobby group, which has yet to decide on a name, will meet formally for the first time next week to plot an industry fightback against politicians and environmentalists.
The aviation industry wants to counter what it believes are exaggerated claims about its impact on climate change. There is also a recognition that the PR debate is being lost, making it more susceptible to what it argues are opportunistic taxes from politicians.
Between 40 to 50 organisations will join the group, which is being loosely modelled on the 'Freedom to Fly' group set up several years ago to back an expansion of airports in the UK, the newspaper reports.
