Gatwick passengers up 4.3%

Gatwick has announced that 2011 was a year of 'consistent growth', with 12 consecutive months of year on year increases in passenger traffic. In December 2011, passenger numbers increased by 19.8% year-on-year, but this was revised down to 4.3% when the impact of snow disruption at the end of 2010 was taken into account.
Just under 33.64m people passed through the airport last year, a 7.3% increase on the previous year, driven by a 15.7% increase in European scheduled passengers. UK and Channel Islands passengers were up 7%, Ireland passengers up 5.8% and North Atlantic passengers up 2.6%. However European charter passengers were down 4.9% and other long haul passengers down 4.7%
As well as handling more passengers, airlines operating from the airport saw average load factors reach a new record of 76.4%. Air transport movements were up 4.7%, but cargo fell by 15.3%.
