Boris urged to back second Gatwick runway

Boris Johnson has been urged to revive plans to build a second runway at Gatwick to increase the capital's air capacity, the Evening Standard reports. Victoria Borwick, a leading Conservative member of the London Assembly, backed the Mayor's call for a new airport in the South-East but said his idea for a floating hub in the Thames Estuary is a ‘longer term aspiration’. Instead, she said he should revisit plans to expand Gatwick after a legal agreement between the Government and the local council that ruled out building a second runway before the end of 2019.
Ms Borwick told the newspaper: ‘Gatwick has to be explored as a possible option. The Government's decision not to allow the construction of a third runway at Heathrow does not negate the need to expand air capacity for London. One alternative is to build a second runway at Gatwick once the moratorium is lifted. Gatwick has rail links that could be expanded and a masterplan in the past explored expansion options. If an estuary airport or the development of other sites is a longer term aspiration, Gatwick could provide an interim solution to the possible threat to London's prominent position as the leading European hub.’
