Heavy snow hits airports again
11.01.10
The heavy snow yesterday saw airports close again, as road and rail transport transport links were thrown in to chaos again, following several days of warmer weather during which snow melted. Gatwick, London City, Birmingham, Cardiff and Southampton airports were closed, while Heathrow cancelled 84 mostly short-haul or domestic flights, both arrivals and departures.
Britain experiencing its coldest winter in three decades, with the fresh blanket of snow on St Hilary's Day, the coldest day of the year according to medieval lore, halting flights from Gatwick, Birmingham and Cardiff airports and throwing many train services into chaos. However, there were signs of a respite to the bitter start to the new year, with the Met Office saying that milder air will bring rain across much of the country by the weekend.
