Gatwick Airport passengers up 3.2%
12.03.10
European destinations proved to be the most popular with travellers at Gatwick Airport last month, as the total number of holidaymakers and business travellers using the hub increased by 3.2 percent. Scheduled flights to the continent recorded the largest increase in passenger numbers, up 10.5 percent.
Gatwick Airport's north Atlantic services, which cover destinations in the US and Canada, experienced the largest drop in passenger numbers of 21.1 percent. They are still struggling with the after affects of the agreement between the EU and US that opened up rival London airport Heathrow to more airlines. This has seen a raft of services move from Gatwick to Heathrow and continues to depress passengers.
Ireland also proved to be less popular with tourists as the number of people travelling to the country through the airport dropped by 10.3 percent, thought to be a reflection of its Eurozone status. However, long-haul flights to destinations other than the north Atlantic were up on last year.
