Gatwick Airport train station upgrade plans brought forward for 2012

Parts of a project to upgrade the railway station at Gatwick Airport are being brought forward to reduce congestion in time for the 2012 London Olympics. The changes to the concourse layout and improvements to information screens and help points are part of a £53m upgrade at the airport. Floor, ceiling and wall tiles and lighting will also be renewed as part of the work expected to begin early in 2012.
Network Rail said Gatwick was one of 10 rail projects under way for the games. Details of the plans were released at the Gatwick Airport Consultative Committee (GATCOM) meeting last week. Building work was to have started in Autumn 2012, along with the rest of the improvements that include a new platform designed to ease the bottleneck at Gatwick for services on the Brighton mainline, a new, escalator and lift, and upgrades to track and signaling to improve performance and reliability of trains using the station.
The whole project is expected to be completed by the end of 2013 and is being funded jointly by Network Rail and the airport.Add to: del.icio.us | Digg it | Newsvine | NowPublic | Reddit
