Survey calls for London airport expansion
10.07.08
Most aviation professionals believe London's main airports do not have the capacity to cope with growth in the next five years, according to a new survey. Three in five of those surveyed thought that Heathrow and Gatwick should be expanded to relieve congestion, while access to airports should be improved.
The survey was conducted by aerospace information company Ascend. Those polled, who included planemakers and aviation financiers, also gave poor marks to the performance of airport operator BAA whose seven UK airports include Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.
BAA's operational performance was rated poor or very poor by 70% while 80% considered BAA's customer-service performance poor or very poor. Over 70% disagreed or strongly disagreed that the current ownership structure of airports in London served the best interests of the travelling public.
