Councillors fear high landing fees could ground Inverness – Gatwick flights
10.05.11
A vital air link between Inverness and Gatwick Airport could be at risk because of increases to landing charges at the London hub, the Inverness Courier reports councillors fear. The highland councillors are concerned increases in costs imposed on regional airlines like Flybe, who operate smaller planes on flights in to Gatwick, will be passed onto passengers and impact on the numbers using the flights, making it less profitable.
The concerns come after Flybe issued a profits warning last week, in which the airline said it might cut back on flights in order to improve yields (increase average fares). The councillors now plan to write to operator Flybe, which runs a three times a day service between Inverness and Gatwick, to support its opposition to the rises in landing fees.
