Weather hits flights at Bristol, Heathrow and Gatwick

High winds and rain pummelling Britain this morning are causing travel disruption and flooding - with the worst yet to come. Winds of more than 80mph are ripping across the south with a slight lull predicted before the gales pick up again later this afternoon, forecasters say.
Trees have been uprooted, buildings damaged and trains and flights delayed or cancelled. At Heathrow, 41 flights out of the airport have been cancelled, with BA the worst hit, and at Gatwick 11 flights were cancelled and 10 inbound ones diverted to other airports, including a Continental Airways flight from New York, which had to touch down at Dublin.
Stansted Airport was operating as normal, however, a spokesman for the airport, said that it had accepted a diverted flight from London City Airport because of the weather. He said Stansted was not expected to suffer major problems because of the weather.
But winds of more than 50 mph caused all ground operations at Bristol Airport to be suspended between 04:00 and 06:00. This led to delays when the first flights took to the air later this morning.
An airport spokesman said: ‘It was so windy overnight that we could not do any of our early-morning ground operation work. The first flight took off nearly 40 minutes late and there will be delays to other services. We expect to operate around 100 flights today and are hoping we will be able to get everyone away.’
