UK flights down 9%
09.11.09
Figures from the aviation consultancy RDC Aviation derived from CAA data show that Britain's 33 busiest airports all report lower passenger numbers in the first eight months of the year, which include the main summer peak.
British travellers are taking 9 percent fewer flights overall, but there are much sharper falls to our most popular holiday destination, Spain – with a a 16 percent fall – and America, travellers from London airports down 10 percent. The loss to New York was even more pronounced, with a decline of over 16 percent.
Some airports have been particularly badly hit. Gatwick lost two million passengers during the eight month period, and traffic at Prestwick Airport was down by around a quarter.
