An air steward has been jailed for eight years for attempting to smuggle drugs into the UK. Ghanaian Kwaku Asante Ayirebi, 30, pleaded guilty to importing a class A drug into the UK at a hearing at Croydon Crown Court yesterday. He was arrested in July after cocaine was seized at Gatwick Airport.
UK Border Agency staff found cocaine with an estimated street value of £100,000 in baggage that arrived on a Ghana Airways flight from Accra. The drugs haul weighed about 4.4lb (2kg).
