Astraeus axe Gatwick – Canada flights; Monarch to take over
09.03.08
Astraeus Airlines will no longer be providing direct service between Canada's Deer Lake Regional Airport and Gatwick Airport after the end of the current winter season. The final listed flight for the company, which provides charter service to Humber Valley Resort, is scheduled to depart Deer Lake for Gatwick at 19:40 on April 18. However, according to Canadian press reports, Monarch Airlines is to take up the service this summer.
A spokeswoman for the resort said it was important to solidify the air link, not just because it would benefit the resort, but also because the service has a major economic impact on Deer Lake and the province's west coast as a whole. She said detailed information on the deal would be available at a later date.
She said: ‘We have a formal press release with our lawyer being vetted right now, but Humber Valley Resort has signed a contract with Monarch, who will be the carrier between the UK and Deer Lake.' An official announcement is expected early next week.
