Gatwick Airport has outlined its 10-year environmental strategy, including plans to cut its carbon emissions by 50% by 2020 compared to 2009 levels. Over the next 10 years, the airport also plans to reduce its energy consumption by 20% (compared to 2009 levels) and its water consumption by 20% (compared to this year). By 2020 Gatwick has also pledged to stop sending waste to landfill, install an electric car recharge network for passengers and staff, and generate power via renewable sources.
The plans – called a ‘Decade of Change’ – sets out the airport’s environmental targets across its business activities for the next 10 years. Other key goals include contributing to Gatwick’s local communities, transforming public transport access for passengers and staff; improving air quality through the use of new technology and systems; reducing operational noise; increasing recycling to 70%; reducing energy and water consumption by 20% and protecting local habitats at the airport.
Gatwick achieved the Carbon Trust Standard at the beginning of August, becoming the biggest UK airport to receive the award. Organisations are awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for measuring, managing and reducing their carbon emissions. Stewart Wingate, Gatwick airport's CEO, said: 'Behaving in a responsible and sustainable way is at the heart of our business. As new owners we've grasped the opportunity to introduce new, challenging targets and initiatives to improve our environmental credentials.'
