Gatwick train delayed because driver ‘didn’t know the way’ !

A Gatwick Express train was delayed because the driver did not know where he was going, the Argus reports. Bemused commuters told the newspaper that they could not believe their ears when the driver announced over the tannoy that he did not know the way to the final destination. Passengers on the Gatwick Express, operating from Victoria to Brighton, were forced to wait at the airport while a driver with a better sense of direction was found.
One passenger said: ‘It was a bit of a surprise to hear the driver being so honest. Everybody on the train took it in good humour. I know it’s probably quite complicated to drive a train but how hard is it to get to Brighton from Gatwick, you’ve just got to go straight.’
A spokesman for Southern Railway, which runs the service, said the train has a scheduled changeover of driver at Gatwick Airport because the driver on the first leg of the journey is a Gatwick Express driver and is not trained to take the train past Gatwick on to Brighton. He added: ‘On the service in question, unfortunately, the driver who was due to take the train from Gatwick to Brighton was late to the train and that was the cause of the delay. The driver made the announcement as he was keen to inform the passengers of the reason for the delay.’
