Gatwick police highlight plane spotters security role
02.05.11
Officers from Gatwick Airport's Police unit recently met with plane spotters to talk about how they can help keep the airport and local communities safe. Police Community Support Officers Richard Griffith and John Chisholm talked about policing at the airport at the annual Gatwick Aviation Enthusiasts Fair. About 670 people attended the fair at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley.
The officers briefed the aviation enthusiasts on the way police work closely with Gatwick Airport to help keep the airport and local communities safe from terrorism and other crime. They also highlighted an important voluntary ID card scheme at the airport, through which the plane spotters are also doing their bit to keep Gatwick safe.
Sergeant Mat Scanlan said: ‘This photo ID scheme is an excellent way of keeping in touch with the genuine aviation enthusiasts who come to the airport. There are over 200 members and they are very co-operative with our patrols and can act as extra pairs of eyes and ears, especially around the airport perimeter.’
