01.06.09
Eye-scanners installed at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham Airports have been used by more than two million passengers, according to Home Office figures.
The Iris Recognition Immigration System (IRIS) scanners, which were introduced at the four airports in 2006, scan passengers' eyes to confirm their identity. Phil Woolas, Minister for Border and Immigration, said: ‘IRIS combines security with quicker times at immigration controls, helping to avoid queues when arriving back in the UK.’
