Scottish airports expect busy weekend
28.06.08
Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh Airport are gearing up for one of the busiest weekends of the year, with the schools out and children now on their summer holidays. Despite the strength of the euro against the pound making many European spots more expensive than usual, Spain is still the most popular destination for people looking for cheap summer sun, while Amsterdam and Paris continue to be popular city breaks.
Over this weekend 290,000 are expected to use BAA's Scottish airports. Glasgow estimates 130,000 passengers passing through the terminal, with another 123,000 at Edinburgh. Aberdeen will see 37,700 flying in and out of the north east. Many more will fly to destinations in Europe from Prestwick Airport.
Yesterday was the busiest day with 35,900 using Edinburgh - the corresponding day last year was the busiest ever, with 35,782 passengers - 35,700 at Glasgow and 12,600 at Aberdeen. An Edinburgh Airport spokeswoman said: ‘It's going to be a busy weekend and potentially our busiest of the year – this time last year we had our busiest-ever day. That record could well go as our passenger numbers are rising month by month.’
