A pensioner has told of her ‘miraculous’ escape after a chunk of ice fell from a plane and crashed through the roof of her home. It landed a few feet away from where she was sitting, the Evening News reports.
Lilias Davidson, 65, was watching television in the kitchen of her Musselburgh home when a block of ice the size of a football smashed through the kitchen roof. Her husband, Alistair, put the pieces of ice in the freezer as evidence because he did not think anyone would believe what had happened!
The grandmother-of-ten told the newspaper: ‘There was just this almighty bang and I thought my telly had exploded. The speed it came through the ceiling at was unbelievable. I really got a fright and it's just a miracle nobody was hurt.’
The block of ice destroyed half-a-dozen tiles in the roof at the rear of the Davidsons' semi-detached home. Edinburgh Airport authorities are now investigating the incident. The believe the ice fell from a cargo plane coming as it came in to land at the airport. Although ice falls from planes are not uncommon, it is rare for property to be hit.
A Civil Aviation Authority spokesman said that such ice usually forms as a result of a faulty valve that allows liquid to leak out, which then freezes in the cold temperature at high altitude. As the plane descends and the air warms up, the ice starts to melt and will fall off.
