Moscow - Edinburgh Airport flights axed
22.02.06
Direct flights between Edinburgh airport and Russia have been axed from this summer's timetable. It is understood that the service, although reasonably successful, has failed to attract enough interest among Russian tourists.
The first link between Edinburgh and Moscow was launched two years ago amid hopes it would bring a new influx of super-rich visitors to the city. Transaero, the country's second largest international airline, included the flights as part of a major expansion, which saw it also launch a Moscow - Manchester route.
The Moscow flights took three and a half hours, flying on Wednesdays between Edinburgh and Domodedovo International Airport. A 40-minute train journey took passengers to Moscow city centre, which Transaero included in the price of the flight.
A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said BAA Scotland is hopeful of finding a new carrier to travel between Scotland and Russia. 'We are sorry that Transaero will not be running their Moscow service this year. We are in regular discussions with airlines about possible new routes and we will continue to investigate possibilities for another airline to pick up the route.'
'Despite the loss of the Moscow service, Edinburgh Airport will be offering our passengers the biggest-ever choice in terms of direct holiday destinations this summer.'
