BAA push ahead with Edinburgh Airport development

Work has begun on a new £40 million departure lounge at Edinburgh Airport, despite warnings from the competition watchdog that the airport may have to be sold off. The project, which will double the size of the existing facility, is one of a number of schemes that operator BAA will push ahead with in order to ensure the continued success of the airport.
The Competition Commission recommended last week that BAA be forced to sell the airport, along with Gatwick and Stansted, in a bid to open up the UK aviation market. Despite reports that the Edinburgh terminal development may be put on ice, BAA said it remained committed to the future of the airport and stressed it remains ‘business as usual’.
Managing director Gordon Dewar said: ‘There is no suggestion of BAA scaling back its ambitious investment plans for Edinburgh Airport. We know the unique role our airport plays in the success of Edinburgh and Scotland. It is entirely right to invest so we can meet the demands on our airport today and into the future.'
‘Going forward, we have a considerable programme of further investment. Work has already begun on the project to double the size of our terminal departure lounge, one of the biggest single investments in Edinburgh Airport's 30-year history. We are also progressing work on a new car rental centre, a major expansion to the immigration hall, upgrades to our airport taxiways and the widening of stands.’
BAA management plan to challenge the forced sale of the airport and are due to meet the Competition Commission on January 20, with a final decision on the airport's future expected before the end of March.
