Sniffer dogs help drugs crackdown at Edinburgh Airport
20.06.08
Sniffer dogs have been deployed to Edinburgh Airport this week as part of a crackdown on drug smuggling. Lothian and Borders Police were working with the UK Border Agency to tighten security at the airport as part of the week-long initiative. They were also keen to boost their profile to deter passengers from attempting to bring drugs from abroad.
Two police dogs - Skye and Sutton - assisted officers in patrolling the airport floors in the scheme which ended today. Although drug seizures from the airport are rare, it is reported that police felt the need to stage the initiative as a powerful reminder as the summer holiday season enters full swing.
Inspector Gary Dickson, of the Edinburgh Airport policing unit, said: ‘The intention of this operation is to target flights from European airports, which have historically been used to smuggle controlled drugs into Scotland. By deploying our drugs dogs at the airport we are sending a message that we are serious about targeting those who think they can get away with bringing illegal substances into the country.’
