Greenpeace protests at four UK Airports
20.06.07
Greenpeace set up booths at four UK airports yesterday and tried to persuading passengers to help fight global warming by using the train instead of a plane. However, the campaigners were quickly removed from Manchester, Newcastle, London City and Edinburgh Airport.
The environmental campaigners, dressed as air stewards and stewardesses and standing behind a mock up of a check-in desk, offered passengers free return train tickets at the four airports. They were targeting domestic plane journeys in particular, which they say could easily be switched to trains that emit less CO2.
Greenpeace director John Sauven said: 'Planes are 10 times more damaging to the climate than trains, and if we don't do something about the growth in aviation, Britain will find it very hard to meet its global warming targets. We are finding travelers are really interested to hear how polluting flying can be.'
However, police surrounded Mr Sauven and his colleagues at London City Airport and marched them out of the building shortly after they started talking to passengers. At Edinburgh Airport the protesters were escorted from the terminal by the police after half-an-hour - and had only given away one ticket during that time.
The Greenpeace activists were also asked to leave Manchester and Newcastle airports by police officers and security staff. No arrests were made.
