Edinburgh Airport plea over fashion belts
16.09.08
Police have criticised ‘naive’ travellers entering terminal search and security checks without realising they are carrying weapons. Bling knuckleduster necklaces, fashionable bullet belts and imitation gun belts are causing security problems at Edinburgh Airport. Dozens of the fashion accessories have been seized between May and September as well as thousands of knives.
The police are calling for common sense to come before fashion sense. Inspector Gary Dickson, from Lothian and Borders Police airport police unit, said wearable weapons are causing ‘very big problems’. He said: 'Security don't assume these things are toys or accessories. Also the x-ray machines in airports are so clear these days that when you see a belt with a handgun-shaped buckle, for example, alarm bells start ringing. Police get involved and passengers about to board a flight panic.'
‘My officers have been called to several incidents recently at the terminal's central search area where articles worn by passengers have been identified as modified weapons and led to the police being involved.'
‘The last thing I want my officers to do is charge someone for being in possession of an offensive weapon, and for them to be denied permission to fly by the airline. We want people to enjoy their travel experience at Edinburgh Airport, but in this era of heightened security, passengers would be ill-advised to wear or carry items which resemble weapons.’
