Soldier fined, security guard sacked over ‘stupid’ gun stunt at Edinburgh Airport

A soldier has been fined and a security worker who failed to spot two toy guns in hand luggage at Edinburgh Airport has been sacked. Soldier Matthew Monaghan, 19, from Northern Ireland, sparked chaos at the airport when a prank to plant toy guns in his friend's hand luggage backfired.
Mr Monaghan, along with another friend, had planted a water pistol and a toy gun in the baggage of two of his friends as they waited to board a Ryanair flight at the airport on May 2 this year. At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday a sheriff criticised his ‘stupid’ stunt after he admitted breach of the peace.
Sheriff Derrick McIntyre fined Monaghan £1350 and told the County Down man he should have known better. Fiscal depute Dev Kapadia said BAA later sacked the person responsible for allowing the bags through unchecked.
