Scottish airports face ‘tough winter’
13.11.08
BAA has said that this winter will be ‘tough’ for its Scottish airports after announcing more poor passenger figures. The economic downturn accelerated the slump in passengers at Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh Airport last month, with their annual total down by 2.4 percent to 20 million. This compares with a 1.6 percent fall in the year to September.
Glasgow, the worst performing of the three airports, saw its passenger drop easing slightly from being down 11 percent in September to 9.1 percent lower last month, to 787,226. Aberdeen suffered the sharpest rate of decline, with its passenger total down 5.3 percent to 302,243. The monthly fall increased from 4.2 percent in September. Edinburgh's total was down by 3.2 percent to 794,009 – compared to 2.9 percent in September – largely due to a 6 percent drop in passengers on UK flights.
A spokeswoman for BAA Scotland said: ‘There is no doubt the aviation industry is feeling the pinch as the credit crunch continues to impact on consumer demand. This winter will be a tough period for airlines and airports in the UK. The challenge is to weather the downturn. We are confident the market will recover.’
