Record flights at Scotland's 'big three' last month

A record two million people flew through Scotland's three biggest airports last month, with a surge of international flights. BAA Scotland, which owns Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport, said overall passenger numbers were up 3.2% in September from the same month last year.
The rise was almost entirely accounted for by dramatic increases in international traffic at all three airports, mostly as a result of new and growing direct flights to Europe and beyond. More than 940,000 people were on foreign flights from its three airports in September, out of a total of 2.04 million. Domestic flying is holding steady too, despite the increase in air passenger duty earlier this year. It was up 0.6% in September from a year before.
Glasgow was Scotland's busiest airport in September with 883,890 passengers, down 0.8% on the previous year, despite a 6% boost in long-haul traffic. Edinburgh Airport, with 848,143 passengers, remains the biggest airport in the 12 months to the end of September. And Aberdeen Airport retained its title as the fastest growing airport, with 311,576 passengers, up 10.5% from the previous year.
