Edinburgh Scotland’s busiest airport
09.04.08
Edinburgh was the busiest airport in Scotland last month, boosted by the early Easter and thousands of passengers seeking early season sunshine. The Scottish Capital's gateway handled 720,012 passengers in March, up 1.0 percent on a year earlier - with traffic boosted by strong international growth, but hit by problems at Heathrow's new Terminal 5.
More than quarter of a million passengers travelled to or from international destinations – a 16 percent rise on the same period last year - with many heading to holiday destinations such as Alicante, Faro and Palma. City break destinations including Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt and Madrid also proved popular – particularly over the Easter break.
Rival Glasgow had 602,600 passengers last month, down 4.6 percent on a year earlier, with Aberdeen Airport passengers down 5.8 percent to 262,200. In the 12 months to March, Edinburgh Airport attracted 9.11 million passengers – an increase of 4.2 percent on the previous 12 months - whilst Glasgow had 8.66m, down 2.3 percent, and Aberdeen 3.41m, up 4.8 percent.
Edinburgh Airport managing director David Johnston said: ‘The first of 27 new services to start this year from Edinburgh took off last month, giving passengers extra frequency and choice. BAA is investing a record £42 million in Edinburgh Airport this year in order to meet the demands of a growing route network and increasing passenger numbers.’
