Footballer ‘too drunk to fly’ from Edinburgh Airport
09.02.09
Hibs goalie Grzegorz Szamotulski was banned from getting on a plane at Edinburgh Airport because airport staff said he was too drunk, the Scotsman reports. Check-in staff at the airport would not allow him on the 05:50 flight to Amsterdam because they feared he could be a danger to other passengers. He was reported to be wobbling on his feet and slurring his speech.
The Polish keeper had to return home to sleep off the effects of a heavy night out after Hibs' draw with Motherwell last Saturday. An airline source told the newspaper: ‘He could barely stand up and was lurching all over the place.’
Mr Szamotulski , who signed for Hibs last month, was heading to Gdansk for a week's break. He said he was surprised when he was told he couldn't fly and claimed it was an over-reaction. He said: ‘I was very calm. I didn't make any trouble. I just went back home and waited for the next plane.’
