Security Alert closes Edinburgh Airport
07.07.09
Edinburgh Airport was evacuated for about 2-1/2 hours yesterday after the discovery of a suspicious suitcase. Staff and passengers had been cleared from the check-in area of the main terminal building, the food court and the domestic arrivals area after a suitcase was found in the ladies toilets in the UK arrivals area of the airport at about 14:20. It only reopened at 17:00, with passengers facing significant delays yesterday evening.
The airport handles up to 35,000 passengers a day during the summer months, and it is thought up to 4500 passengers were affected by the closure. A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said Army bomb disposal experts were called after the suitcase was found. He said: ‘They examined the luggage, and found that it posed no threat. Inquires are underway to establish how the luggage came to be located within the toilets.’
