Busy weekend at Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport saw increased passenger numbers over the three day bank holiday, as travellers took advantage of the expanding number of flights. Budget airline Flybe said it had carried ten percent more passengers on its domestic flights to Edinburgh compared with last year.
A raft of new routes between Edinburgh and other UK cities have opened in recent years, including flights connecting with Scotland's capital with Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, London, Manchester, Newquay, Norwich and Southampton.
A spokeswoman for Edinburgh Airport said a number of summer flights were also due to start over the bank holiday weekend, including Flyglobespan's Toronto route. The new Delta Airlines service to the New York also began on Friday, providing another boost for passenger numbers. ‘As well as these, we expect normal services to be busier on the already established routes,’ she said.
Flybe said the busiest UK routes to Edinburgh over the weekend were from Belfast, Manchester and Newquay. Mike Rutter, the airline's chief commercial officer, said: ‘Thanks to the support of the people of Edinburgh, our flights to and from the Scottish capital have proved very popular this year. In the last 12 months we have increased the number of routes from Edinburgh from 9 to 12 with new services to Cardiff, Rennes and Bergerac.’
City council leader Jenny Dawe said: ‘The rise in short-haul passengers coming through Edinburgh Airport shows the city is a big draw for people across the UK.’
