Climate change campaigners Edinburgh Airport protest
05.04.08
Environmental campaigners will target Edinburgh Airport today to highlight the growing problem of carbon emissions from the aviation industry. The Edinburgh branches of the World Development Movement and Friends of the Earth are holding the protest as part of a bid to get the Government to include international aviation emissions in a new Climate Change Bill currently going through Parliament.
Gillian Wilson of Friends of the Earth Edinburgh, said: ‘It's crazy for Gordon Brown to leave out climate changing emissions from planes and ships from the new Climate Change Bill. Why should our local industry and businesses be held to account for their carbon emissions but not the aviation industry? It is like banning drink-driving but making vodka drinkers exempt.’
The airline industry is expected to be one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gases over the coming years. The protest has won the support of Edinburgh West MP John Barrett, who said: ‘Given the projected rise in aviation emissions and the lack of awareness about the huge carbon impact of shipping, any Bill which does not take these two sources of emissions into account will be compromised from the very start.’
