More UK airports including Glasgow and Edinburgh get two bags okay

More UK airports including Glasgow and Edinburgh have been granted permission to allow passengers to bring more than one piece of hand baggage aboard planes starting next Monday (January 7), the government has announced.
A limit of one carry-on bag a passenger was introduced in August 2006 following a failed plot to blow up transatlantic planes using liquid explosives. The measure led to complaints from travellers, airlines and airports as a surge in checked items caused longer waiting times and broken conveyors.
The rule will be withdrawn on January 7 at airports that have convinced the Department for Transport (DfT) that they can deal with extra hand luggage without increasing queues at baggage screening. Last week, the DfT announced a list of 17 airports that had met their requirements, with three more added - including Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport - this week. However, Gatwick, the UK's second biggest airport, has yet to make the list.
Airports where the restriction is lifted are: Aberdeen, Benbecula, Birmingham, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heathrow, Inverness, Islay, Kirkwall, London City, Manchester, Plymouth, Prestwick, Southampton, Southend, Stansted, Stornaway, Sumburgh and Wick. A decision for Gatwick is expected 'in the next couple of days,' a BAA spokesman said.
In addition to confusion over some UK airports allowing two bags and some UK airports only allowing one, airlines set their own luggage rules and some, including Ryanair, Europe's largest discount carrier, will retain the single carry-on restriction. In addition, restrictions on liquids remain, with more than 100ml of any liquid not allowed through security.
The DfT has indicated that it intends to remove the passenger baggage restrictions for all airports from May, 2008.
