Regional airports warn of strike delays
26.11.11
Inbound passengers face delays when arriving at regional airports across the UK next week due to a strike by border control staff. The warning from a number of regional airports comes after Heathrow Airport's operations director warned passengers could face 12 hour delays at passport control, leading to gridlock at the hub and mass flight cancellations.
UK airports including Luton, Liverpool and East Midlands have warned that passengers ‘may experience delays’ at passport control between 22:00 next Tuesday until midnight the following day. Members of the Public & Commercial Services and ISU Unions are joining industrial action by public service staff in protest over pensions.
The airports will aim to keep the impact on departing flights to a minimum, however, if queues inside terminals become too big, passengers may be kept on arriving planes, which could delay departing flights. Additional airport staff will be on hand at airports to help passengers. The UK Border Agency said they were working with airports to try to minimise problems.
