East Midlands Airport based air ambulance retained
24.10.07
An air ambulance service for Leicestershire and Derbyshire will continue to operate from East Midlands Airport, officials announced. Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance will operate the helicopter starting in April, but £300,000 must be raised by the end of March to support the service.
It had been announced the current service, operated by West Midlands Ambulance Service on behalf of East Midlands Ambulance Service, would be moved to the West Midlands - which would increase response times. However, a new service, to be known as the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, will launch in April when the current helicopter is moved. Using an Augusta 109 helicopter, it will carry at least one doctor on board every mission in addition to the paramedics.
