New East Midlands Airport hotel sets green standards
24.09.11
The new £22m, 218 room Radisson Blu Hotel at East Midlands Airport is setting environmental standard for new hotels. Boasting an Energy Performance Certification rating of 2, the new airport hotel is the most efficient in Rezidor's European portfolio of over 400 hotels. Its carbon neutral build supports East Midlands Airport's aspiration for its ground operations to be carbon neutral by 2012.
The construction rating for Energy Performance Certificate rates the hotel as ‘A+', with an 88% reduction in carbon dioxide compared to a traditionally built hotel. It is powered and heated by a tri-generation combined heat and power plant (CHP) (powered by recycled oil previously used in the cooking of food) to provide both heating and cooling needs - with surplus power being exported to the grid. Other environmentally friendly measures include rainwater harvesting, with a 62,500 litre underground storage surface water tank (SUDS), and motion sensitive lighting throughout.
The design of the new hotel reflects the theme of aviation, as well as providing references to the nearby National Forest. The theme of aviation is most obviously reflected in two, five storey striking aluminium clad ‘wings' and the hotel's entrance canopy. The 218 roomed hotel includes 8 executive suites, a full service restaurant and bar with wine cellar, conferencing facilities with function suite and full leisure and health facilities including swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms.
