Locals unhappy over East Midlands night flights
23.03.08
Those living near East Midlands Airport are unhappy after it was revealled that the airport has more night-time flights than London's Gatwick and Heathrow combined.
Statistics revealed after questions in Parliament from North West Leicestershire MP David Taylor reveal that there were more than 19,888 flights from the airport between 23:00 and 07:00 during 2007, on average about one every 9 minutes. At Heathrow, there were 6238, while at Gatwick there were 12,909 (both figures from 23:30 to 06:00).
Mr Taylor demanded answers after receiving scores of complaints from residents angry about sleep deprivation caused by noisy planes. He said that the figures were ‘concerning and dismaying’.
He said that there are statutory limits on the number of overnight flights going to and from Heathrow and Gatwick but none apply to East Midlands. Mr Taylor now intends to press the Government for a limit on overnight flights at the airport.
