East Midlands Parkway station construction begins
21.12.07
Construction work has started on a new railway station near East Midlands Airport. The £25.5m East Midlands Parkway station is due to open next December. It is hoped it will lead to reduced congestion in the region's city centres.
Plans for the site near junction 24 of the M1, close to the power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, were first drawn up almost 10 years ago. Since then there have been a series of delays and a public inquiry.
The station will include four platforms, step free access, a station building with ticket office and 850 car parking spaces for passengers. Built to the latest environmental standards the interchange will be one of the most environmentally friendly stations on the National Rail network, incorporating ground water heating and grey water recycling.
It will allow passengers to come off the M1, drive to the station, which is five minutes away and hop on the train to London. It is likely to be served by at least two trains an hour to and from London St Pancras International. A shuttle bus will operate from the station to East Midlands Airport.
